Places To Visit While In Perth, Scotland

Perth, in Scotland, is also widely called to as being the  'Gateway to the Highlands'. Located on the River Tay's banks, the town of Perth was the capital of Scotland and back in medieval times the busy small town was known locally as St. John's Toun or Saint Johnstoun. The name of the town, or, in the Gaelic, Peairt, derives from the word of the Picts for a copse. Nowadays  this beautiful small town is an excellent location as a base for a vacation in Scotland with a useful number of bed and breakfast accommodation in Perth to choose from ranging from the pretty cheap hotel to the amazingly pricey first class five star luxury country estate hotels and the likes with loads of character and charm.

Whether you stay for a single day or a couple of weeks you will very quickly see that there are a large number of exciting things to see and do in the town of Perth and the surrounding region. attractions include; shopping, historical attractions, sport and leisure pursuits and restaurants and many other types of entertainment. In the not too distant past the town was a successful port mainly dealing in the export of whisky, leather, bleached products and linen. One characteristic of Perth that is particularly tough for any other location to beat is the neighbouring countryside which is far greater than just stunning, words fail. Dotted around are a great many places to visit including fortified houses, historical buildings, stately homes and castles.

Only a short distance west of Perth is the medieval structure of Huntingtower Castle. Constructed in stunningly beautiful it has been altered and redeveloped numerous times over the centuries. Huntingtower was first built as 2 separate tower houses but constructed pretty close together.

About 3m away, from the town of Perth, tourists will find the 16C Elcho Castle, which features the most breathtaking views of the River Tay. The castle can be dated back to 1570 when the Wemyss family commissioned it's construction who were it's owners until nineteen twenty nine. The Castle is now in the capable hands of Historic Scotland.

Probably the most popular visitor attraction, within easy reach of Perth, is one of the finest country homes to be found in the Scottish nation, Scone Palace. Here folk are able to study the past history of the palace, where the early Scottish kings were crowned such as, Robert The Bruce who took to the throne in 1306.

Besides the visitor attractions discussed above the town of Perth has countless more, which means that it is an excellent town for a vacation for the family. Other tourist attractions and places, worth seeing, to be found in Perthshire include the following; Kinnoull Hill, Perth Ice Rink (for curling etc.), Perthshire Visitor Centre, the Black Watch museum in Balhousie Castle and Perth Art Gallery & Museum.
