Learning To Enjoy Train Travel
Of the many travel options presented to us today, none is as unique as travel by train. Cheaper than airfare and more enjoyable than bus travel, train travel provides an opportunity for scenic enjoyment, while being relatively easy on the pocketbook.
There are many reasons why traveling by train is not as popular as it once was. For one thing, the travel time is much greater than going the same distance by plane. In addition, the cost is greater than the price of a bus ticket. However, there are also upsides to taking a train and following these tips may make the journey more comfortable and enjoyable.
Be prepared for a long trip on train travel. Many people make the mistake of being anxious about travel time and are under prepared for the length of travel. Be aware that trains may halt frequently for stops and for border crossings, and so will take their time getting to their destinations. If you understand this ahead of time, it will make your travel much easier and much more enjoyable.
While a train trip could be longer than driving yourself, you do have a very good idea of the scheduled time of departure and arrival, just like flying and the trip could easily be quicker than taking a bus. No rush hour traffic to plan around or drive though. If your trip lasts overnight, the choices of sleeping arrangements are significantly better than that of a bus, and your trip continues without having to find a place to stop and sleep if you are driving.
Relax and enjoy the scenery. You could see things you never would while flying over them at great heights, or you could see things you would miss while driving. Guidebooks can help you find the sights and know when to look for them. Binoculars can help you see things easier. Or you could read a book by your favorite author or bring a puzzle book.
If you are not into sightseeing or reading, you could bring your laptop to play games, watch movies, or to work on that presentation. With the exception of cars specifically designed to be quiet, you bring a CD player, I-pod or hand held video game player. Play cards with someone you meet on the train, you just may make a new friend or two along the way. Depending on the length of the trip, some type of food is available, or you can bring your own.
If you are traveling with children, make sure you bring enough activities to keep them occupied. Not only do you not want to have to deal with your own child bored on a train, neither do other passengers. Bring some books and small quiet toys. Another good idea on the train is hand held video games, just remember to keep the volume down so as not to bother others. Lastly you may want to bring a few snacks and a small pillow or blanket for a nap. This way they will be entertained and you will be able to enjoy your train trip even more.
